Will of Jonathan Evans, New Hanover County, NC, 15 January 1770 In the name of God, Amen, I Jonathan Evans, of New Hanover County, Province of North Carolina, Planter, being sick and weak of body, but of sound and perfect mind and memory, praised be God for the same and being minded of the uncertainty of this mortal life, and that all must die, and having full trust and confidence in Almighty God that I shall be saved through the merits of our blessed Savior Jesus Christ, do make and publish this my last Will and Testament, in manner following… First, I will that all those debts as I do owe in right to any manner of person or persons whatsoever, shall be well and truly paid in convenient time after my decease. Item - I give and bequeath to my dear and well beloved wife, Ellinor Evans, one third part of my estate both real and personal and it is my will that she shall continue on my plantation and have possession of dwelling house during her natural life. Item - I give and bequeath to my two eldest sons, Rees and David, my plantation with the appentandances, 320 acres on the river to Rees and 320 to David and my will is that they shall put to school my two youngest sons Samuel and John, to school them their charge. Item - I give and bequeath to my eldest daughter Ann Kelly, the sum of five shillings proclamation money. Item - I give and bequeath to my second daughter Priscilla, the sum of five shillings proclamation money. Also, I give and bequeath all the rest and residue of stock of cattle, hogs, horses, etc, to my five sons to be equally divided among them, and I make, constitute and appoint my said wife, Ellinor and my two sons Rees and David, executors of this my Last Will and testament, in witness whereof, I, the said Jonathan Evans, have to this my last Will and Testament set my hand and seal on this fifteenth day of January in the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and seventy.
