DEMILLY, MORRIS-DEVERE posted by John McKendrick on Thursday, November 6, 1997

My great-grandmother's husband, John Louis DEMILLY was born in Wilmington in about 1813. His father John Louis was in the French Army stationed in Haiti when their 1793 rebellion broke out. At some point after that he moved to Wilmington and lived there with his wife (name not known) until after two boys had been born. Then the family returned to France for several years before returning to the US. They arrived in Tallahassee in 1828, and the family remained there. I still have DeMilly relations living in and arround Tallahassee. John Louis DeMilly married Marie-Louise MORRIS-DEVERE in 1834 in Tallahassee. President Tyler appointed him Treasurer of Leon County, FL and he remained in that position for more than 50 years. I looked at your resources that I could access, but had no luck with DeMilly. I would be ever so pleased if you might be able to give me a lead. Thank you for your great service - the web page - and I hope that I might find out a bit more about my family. Very sincerely John DeMilly McKendrick

HARTMAN posted by Shelly Dooley on Tuesday, December 2, 1997

In the book, Chronicles of the Cape Fear River, there is a mention of Wilmington's First Presbyterian Church, and it says (at the time of publication, 1916) there hangs on the wall of the church a "framed handbill, circular in form......Within the circle this information is given:......Building Committee:.....Jacob HARTMAN."
Would like to know if this "framed handbill" is still hanging. Would like to have a photograph. Anyone know about this? This Jacob Hartman is my direct ancestor. Thanks for any info. Willing to trade research in Indianapolis. Shelly

KENAN, LORING posted by Michael Butzgy on Friday, December 12, 1997

I'm a researcher working on a book about William Wing LORING, who as you may know, was born in Wilmington on December 12, 1817. Among other things, Loring was a Confederate major general, and a general in the Egyptian army.
I've had varying degrees of success researching Loring's family tree. What I do know is that Reuben LORING of Hingham, MA married Hannah KENAN of Wilmington on May 18, 1811. The family later moved to St. Augustine, Florida.
I'm trying to learn whether Hannah KENAN is in fact a member of the famous North Carolina KENAN family (such as the Kenan-Fagler School of Business, etc.).
Any help you might provide is most appreciated.

BUTLER posted by Charlie Weaver on Sunday, December 21, 1997

I hope I'm not disturbing the system by asking for your assistance directly. I am trying to learn something about a road name in Pender Co NC which nobody in the area (I have visited & talked to a knowledgeable 'Old Timer' in the area) seems to have heard of. Perhaps you can put me in touch with someone who knows or might know of a reference. A current NC county atlas book put out by DeLorme shows the road which comes out of Cypress Creek in Duplin Co and ends at NC 50 at Maple Hill in Pender is named "Blacksmith Shop Rd." No one in the area I asked about it, including Duplin geography expert Wellon Maready, had ever heard it called that. Now, I'm aware that these county atlas books can have many errors, but just on the chance that some reference somewhere showed the road with that name - I don't think DeLorme would just make it up - I thought perhaps someone in Pender would know of a reference. The reason I am 'chasing' this is that my ggg-gf, Elijah BUTLER, a resident of the area, was a blacksmith. He is listed in Cypress Creek twnshp in 1840 Duplin census, New Hanover, where I believe his shop was, in 1850, and Duplin again in 1860. If you know of someone who might have this reference, or the name of a person to call in the Pender Tax Office or R of D who has interest in this sort of thing, I would certainly appreciate receiving the info. Thank you.

Hi There. My name is Dennis Witsman and I am looking for any information for my 4th Great Grandfather Conrad Witsman. He first shows up in the book Colony of North Carolina 1735 - 1764 Abstracts of Land Patents Volune One by Margaret M. Hofmann. It states as follows; 487 Pg. 84 Conrad WHITMAN 6 October 1751 200 acres in New Hanover County, joining Jacob HANSKEY and the river. Note indicates: Not valid (In addition, there is no grantor given for this patent.) It also states 4711 Pg. 64 Conrade WITMAN 28 september 1754 250 acres in Duplin County on the W. side of the N. E. branch of Cape Fear above the Dutch Landing - being the Lands the sd. Witman Lives on, joining a Corner of a Former Survey of the sd. Land, Jacob HAUNCHY, a pond, and the river It also states 4943 pg. 130 William BURTON 18 March 1756 56 acres in Duplin County on the - side of the N. E. branch of Capefear river above William BURTONS home place, joining Condrick WIDMAN In the 1790's Census, it shows Conrad WITSMAN, in Chatman County, North Carolina. In the 1800's Census, it shows Conrad WITSMAN in Orange County, North Carolina. We have been stuck on Conrad WITSMAN for the past twenty years. We have not been able to find out where He came from or who His parents were and where they came from. We think that Conrad WITSMAN was from Germany Ancestry. If you have any information, I would thankful for it. Thank You
