Chase, Ellen and Kelly of Dallas, TX; his daughter Donna Overton, her husband Glenn their children

Todd Jr., Johnny Ray

Johnny Ray Todd Jr. always had to laugh about it.

Even while working as a special operations paramedic, wrestling life's worst on a daily basis for more
than a decade, 'Johnny Bravo's' infectious grin was a stitched facial feature. His smile melted the iciest
of personalities - perhaps that's why it so seldom wore off - but his wit could pierce concrete.

When Johnny Ray died on the afternoon of May 29, the 33-year-old Wilmington native and Scotts Hill
resident's departure kicked the Cape Fear Region in the lower gut, leaving hundreds to exhale: Calling
to console his family, his wife and his daughter, Madison Rae, 6.

Johnny Ray mattered. And we knew it.

Hundreds poured memories into a facebook memorial, In Loving Memory of Johnny Todd, which
exploded overnight. In existence only five days, the memorial bore 545 new members and 91
comments by Wednesday afternoon.

Friends and New Hanover Regional EMS comrades remembered the rebel, the prankster who was
"easy going, but determined," a friend wrote.

Anyone who knew Johnny Ray loved him, and that was no accident.

When doing something he loved, his flood of efforts renounced any semblance of failure. Like the
ocean he grew up on, and upon whose waves he danced, Johnny Ray immersed himself, perfecting
each new duty with unparalleled vigor and passion.

But like most great minds, the man who never gave up knew to pick his battles wisely.

His moment in the southern sun wasn't for wasting on the menial.

Cleaning his vehicle, for example, didn't top his list of priorities.

But the same cannot be said of his many pairs of shoes, which he kept spotless; the laces neatly
aligned.

Johnny Ray also knew his morals were worth the good fight.

His high road wove an executive path, especially when it rolled along at 75 mph with a critically
injured patient in tow.

Johnny Ray invited challenge, basked in it.

And he always had to laugh about it, sprinting through the good life at lightspeed and hustling to
his sacred destination.

Johnny Ray's legacy, in Greg Graffin's words, etches 'a mark' on our souls.

By design, his mark won't heal; his memories, however, will forever repair our hardest of times.

And we'll laugh about it.

Left to cherish his memory are his daughter Madison Rae Todd; wife Heather Todd and her son,
Ayden Baer; parents Brenda and Johnny Ray Todd Sr.; grandparents Patricia Louise and the late
Donald Lee Goff, Kay Francis and the late Billy Ray Todd; brother Michael Lee Todd and Cassia
Devison.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, June 6, 2009, at Northside
Baptist Church, N. College Road. Interment will follow with full EMS honors at Oleander Memorial
Gardens. Serving as pallbearers are Brandon Todd, Billy Murrell, Jason Hunt, Darrell Klein, Ivan
Kwarziny, David Riedrich, Rocky DeArmitt and Grant Moore. Serving as Honorary Pallbearers will
be members of New Hanover Regional EMS.

The family will receive friends at the church from 7-9 p.m, on Friday, June 5, 2009.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Madison Rae Todd Education Fund, which can
be mailed or dropped off at any Bank of America in the United States.

We invite you to visit www.mem.com; the family has requested audio tributes be left in Johnny's
memory through this Web site. These tributes will be heard during the visitation hours and prior
to the service time.
