Amelia "Amy" Barthelmes, 63, of Leland, passed away June 29, 2009.
She is survived by son Francis R. Cote and wife Lisa, of Boiling Spring
Lakes, daughter Dawn M. Wadsworth, of Winnabow, eight grandchildren
Crystal, Shannon, Kelli, Ricky, Faye, Amy, Zachary and Summer, and 9
great-grandchildren, lifelong friends Denny Wadsworth, George and Verna
Jansen.
Amy was a devoted Jehovah Witness and a member of the Leland
Congregation. She was a loving mother, Nana and friend to all. She was
best known for her recipes.
The family will receive friends 6:00 - 7:30 PM, Monday, July 6, 2009 at
her residence. A Memorial service will be 3:00, Tuesday, July 7, 2009,
at Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses in Leland.

Ralph Terry Eubanks of 6060 Ashford Drive, Clinton, died Sunday, June
28, 2009, at Wayne Memorial Hospital, Goldsboro. The funeral will be at

Terence Thomas Finch, 83, passed away at home on June 29th, 2009 after
a brief illness.
Born February 5th, 1926 in Dunedin, New Zealand to the late John and
Rosie Finch, Terry was predeceased by his wife of 29 years, Anita
Finch, beloved son Richard Finch, brother, John Finch, and son-in-law,
Alan Shapleski.
Terry was a true 'Kiwi' through and through, but also loved his
homeland of the last 26 years. His coming to the States began the
blending of two families, half a world apart, but as close as if they
were blood relatives.
He is survived by his loving wife of 25 years, Alma Klinefelter White
Finch of the home, adored daughters Jenny Finch Shapleski, of
Wellington, NZ; & Cilla Finch Cooper and husband Len, of Devenport,
NZ; daughter-in-law, Rebecca Finch of Christchurch, NZ; step-children
Lisa White Brewster & husband David, of Wilmington, NC, Eric White
& wife Elsa of Spring, TX, John White and wife Stacey, of Baton
Rouge, LA, Lori White of Houston, TX, and half-brother, Clive Finch of
Mosgill, NZ.
Surviving are grandchildren, Oliver Shapleski, London, UK; Samuel
Cooper & wife Maria, New York, NY; Gemma Shapleski, Wellington, NZ;
Luke Shapleski, London, UK; Anita Cooper Wilkie & husband Phan,
Auckland, NZ: Milan Cooper, Auckland, NZ; Madeleine Finch,
Christchurch, NZ; and great-grandson, Ensai Shapleski, of Wellington,
NZ.
Also surviving are step-grandchildren Ashley Brewster, Eric Brewster,
& Anna Kathryn Brewster, of Wilmington, NC; Brianna White of
Lafayette, LA; Richard Floyd & Lindsay Floyd, of Houston, TX;
Johnathan White and Kendall White of Baton Rouge, LA; Joel White &
Dana White, of Spring, TX.
Terry was a member of Queen Elizabeth's Royal Entourage in 1953 in
charge of telecommunications. He was also noted for introducing the
first computers to New Zealand for government usage. He was an avid
salmon fisherman, world traveler, and stamp collector. He enthralled
his family and friends with his 'Kiwi' wit and wisdom. He was a
gentleman to the end.
A memorial service will be held at 2 PM, Thursday, July 2, 2009 at
Andrews Valley Chapel.
Following the ceremony, family will receive friends at the Brewsters'
residence. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to Cape Fear
Hospice. The family would like to thank Lower Cape Fear Hospice and his
caregivers.

BOILING SPRING LAKES -- Mr. Dennis Karl Finley, age 70, of 1191 S.
Shore Drive, Boiling Spring Lakes, died Monday, June 29, 2009, at his
home.
Mr. Finley was born in Cabell County, West Virginia, on May 15, 1939,
and was the son of the late Edgar and Doris Ferguson Finley. He was a
U.S. Army Retired Major during which time he served two tours in
Vietnam. He was also retired Safety Director at Sunny Point Military
Ocean Terminal. Mr. Finley was a Mason and also an avid hunter and
fisherman.
He is survived by his wife, Ruth Ann Finley of the home; two children,
James Finley and wife Lori of Dallas, Texas, Susan Finley Thomas and
husband MAJ Jason Thomas of Leavenworth, Kansas; five grandchildren,
James "Clay" Finley, Benjamin Finley, Carter Finley, Nathan Thomas,
Cullen Thomas; a brother, Dale K. Finley and wife Judy of Huntington,
West Virginia; a sister, Donna Edgar of Huntington, West Virginia;
numerous nieces and nephews and a honorary grandchild, Chase Smith of
Boiling Spring Lakes. In addition he had numerous lifelong and loyal
friends.
The family will receive friends from 6-8 Thursday evening at

Patricia F. Hickmon, a resident of Wilmington, North Carolina died
Monday, June 29, 2009. She was born in Millen, Georgia on June 24, 1941
and was the daughter of the late Zelma Fulmer and Rufus Clyde Fulmer.
Pat received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology from Mercer
University in Macon, Georgia, and held many professional positions
during her career. These included: Executive Director of CFCC
Foundation, Cape Fear Community College; Associate with Christoph
Paccard Bellfoundries: Senior Consultant, Institutional Development
Associates; Executive Director of FTCC Foundation, Inc., Fayetteville
Technical Community College; Election Registrar, Cumberland County
Board of Elections; Women's News Director, WRCS Radio Station; Part
Owner and Personnel Manager Surfwood Pharmacy.
Her professional, civic and social activities included: President and
Vice President, Cape Fear Community College Chapter of the American
Association of Women in Community Colleges; Order of the Cape Fear;
Vice Chairman, Pender County ABC Board; Board of Directors, New Hanover
Mental Health Association; President, NETWORTH (Fayetteville

Mrs. Hickmon is survived by her husband of 46 years, James Ralph

and Bill Spooner; her brother-in-law and wife, Ed and Jo Hickmon and
several nieces and nephews.

John Clayton Lennon of Bolton, died Tuesday, June 30, 2009. The service

David C. Massengill, age 85, of Wilmington, N.C., died June 30, 2009.
He was born in Four Oaks, N.C., September 1, 1923. He graduated from
Four Oaks High School and attended East Carolina University and the
University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
Mr. Massengill was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church of
Wilmington and was a retired state employee having retired from the
North Carolina Department of Probation and Parole in 1986. He served as
an officer and as Assistant Divisional Supervisor of the Wilmington
Division, and as Assistant Branch Manager of the Fayetteville district.
He also served as Branch Manager of the Durham district. The last five
years of his tenure, was as Hearing Officer for Eastern North Carolina.
Mr. Massengill is survived by his four children, Donna Talmadge, Donald
Massengill, Dennis Massengill of Wilmington, N.C., and David Earl
Massengill of Four Oaks, N.C., five grandchildren and six
great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his wife of forty-three
years, Doris Smith Massengill.
A memorial service will be held Friday, July 3 at 2 p.m. at Trinity
United Methodist Church in Wilmington by Rev. Mike Davis. The family
will receive friends in the Fellowship Hall of the church immediately
following the service.

Cynthia "Cindy" Swart Meshaw, 55, of Wilmington, NC, went home to be
with her Lord on Saturday, June 27, 2009 at Lower Cape Fear Hospice and
LifeCare Center.
She was born in Wilmington, NC, on June 28, 1953, the daughter of James
Edward "Eddie" Swart and Betty Lou Swart.
Cindy was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother who loved her family
and her church. She grew up as a member of Wrightsboro Baptist Church
and was a 1971 graduate of New Hanover High School. She was loved by
everyone and will be especially remembered as always working to help
others.
Surviving in addition to her parents are her husband of thirty-five
years, Greg Meshaw; two children, Laura Katherine Simpson and husband
Scott, and Gregory Todd Meshaw; two grandchildren, Kaleigh Elizabeth
Simpson and Sydnie Katherine Simpson; two sisters, Debbie Swart Price
and Sherry Swart Rhodes, her twin, and one brother, James Michael Swart.
A memorial service will be held 11:00 am Tuesday, July 7, 2009, at
Wrightsboro Baptist Church. The family will receive friends one hour
prior to the service at the church.

James Joseph Murphy, 78, of Hampstead, passed away on June 30, 2009.
James was born on March 9, 1931, in New York, NY, to the late William
and Christina McMahon Murphy. He was preceded in death by a daughter,
Jeanmarie Murphy Brown.
Survivors include his wife, Helen Milne Murphy and three children,
James W. Murphy, Mary Murphy-Uhl and John F. Murphy.
The family will receive friends Wednesday and Thursday, from 7-9:00pm,

ROSE HILL -- Esther Parkhurst, 84, died Tuesday, June 30, 2009, at
Brian Center in Wallace. Mrs. Parkhurst was born in Duplin County on
August 7, 1924, to the late Archie Lewis and Alice Malcolm Ezzell
Matthis.
Mrs. Parkhurst is survived by sons, Lawrence Allen Parkhurst, Sr. of
Minnesota, Ronald Tracy Parkhurst of Magnolia; daughter, Cheryl
Brinkley of Magnolia; sisters, Norma Croom of Warsaw, Evelyn Ennis of
Castle Hayne, Edna Bass, Goldie Powell, both of Rose Hill, Patricia
Byerly of Yanceyville; 10 grandchildren, and 7 great-grandchildren.

Mr. John Cabriel Breckenridge Regan III, 68, of Holden Beach, NC, and
formerly of Lumberton, died Monday, June 29, 2009, at New Hanover
Regional Medical Center.
The funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, July 2, 2009, at
Chestnut Street United Methodist Church in Lumberton with Dr. Stan
Smith officiating. Burial will be at Fisher Family Cemetery on Shaw

Lumberton.
Breck was born on September 2, 1940, in St. Pauls. He graduated from
the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1962, served in the
United States Navy for three years and graduated from Wake Forest
University law school in 1968. He practiced law in Lumberton until
retiring to Holden Beach in 2004. Breck was an active member of
Chestnut Street United Church where he taught Sunday School for 20
years. He was Chairman of the Board, Chairman of the Trustees and was
also Chairman of the Finance Committee. He served on two State
committees for the Bar, Disciplinary Hearing Commission and also a
Counselor for the State Bar.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John C.B. Regan, Jr. and Mary
Ann Regan of St. Pauls and his brother, Steve Regan of Raleigh.
He is survived by his wife of 29 years, Sharron; his daughters, Susan
Regan Kitchen of Chapel Hill and son-in-law, Jim; and Catherine Regan
Walsh of Charlotte and son-in-law, David; and four grandchildren Kenan
and Karsen Kitchen and Connor and Taylor Walsh; his siblings, Mary
Brewer Regan of Raleigh, Maynette Regan and George Regan, both of St.
Pauls and Cabell Regan of Pittsboro. He is also survived by his brother
and sister-in-law Ed and Donna Hodges of Fairmont and their children,
Edward, Jim and wife, Julie, and Rose and Gary Simmons; and
brother-in-law, Bobby Owens and wife, Kathy of Charlotte and their son,
Michael.

George "Bill" William Ward, 68, of Leland, died Sunday, June 28, 2009,
at his residence.
He was born in Newport News, VA, on December 12, 1940, the son of the
late Belford Earl and Elsie Marie (Hopkins) Ward, and was preceded in
death by his wife, Mary Elizabeth Ward, in August 2008.
A Veteran of the Vietnam War, he earned the rank of Gunnery Sergeant in
the U.S. Marine Corps.
He is survived by four daughters, Cynthia M. Marshall and husband
Harley, of Leland, NC, Natalile A. Vonville of Leland, NC, Tina L.
Jackson of Leland, NC. and Georgette W. Shockley and husband Richard,
Jr., of Laurel, DE, two sisters, Sandra A. Wingo of Earlville, MD,
Peggy A. Haun, of MD, three brothers, Bobby J. Ward of West Palm Bay,
FL, David L. Ward of Bear, DE, Earl T. Ward of Elkton, MD, and four
grandchildren.

NEW HANOVER -- Fredina Aims, 86, of Wilmington, passed away at the
Autumn Care nursing facility here in Wilmington.
She was born in Nova Scatia August 18, 1922,
She was preceded in death, by her husband of 51 years, Edward Sr., in
1997.
She leaves behind 3 sons; Edward John Aims of Wilmington, Clifford
Arnold Aims of Smithfield, VA and Russell Dean Aims of Boston, MA; 2
grandchildren, Stacy Aims Morig and David Aims and 1 great grandchild,
Peter Edward Morig.
She truly loved Wilmington, playing cards and reading.

Marvin Franklin Byrd 74, died Tuesday, June 30, 2009, at New Hanover

Mrs. Dorothy L. Capers beloved wife of Maj. James Capers Jr., Retired,
passed away on June 28th, 2009, at Onslow Memorial Hospital in
Jacksonville, NC.
"Dottie", as everyone affectionately called her, was born on June 13th,
1938, in Barnwell Co., South Carolina.
On June 20th, 1959, she married the love of her life, Cpl. James Capers
Jr., U.S. Marine Corps. She worked as homemaker and her husband was a
career Marine. They were blessed with their only son, Gary Wayne Capers.
Dottie supported and endured Jim's multiple combat deployments
throughout the years, only to lose their son at an early age in 2003.
Though she had been through more in one lifetime than anyone should
have to bear, she remained steadfast her in faith, family, and God.
She will be remembered as a gentle and compassionate woman. Although
she had only one son, there are many men and women that refer to her as
"Mom" and "Grandma" and that was precisely what she was to them. She
was always someone you could go to for motherly guidance and care, or
even just a kind word.
Dottie enjoyed painting, gardening, cooking and dancing. She also loved
to spend days outside working in her garden, taking care of the fish in
her pond, and watching and feeding the animals and birds in her
backyard.
She is survived by her loving husband of 50 years, Maj. Jim Capers,
Retired; one sister: Mrs. Fannie McMillan and one brother: Willie L.
Green Retired Navy Chief Petty Officer, both of Baltimore, MD; her many
nieces and nephews; her grandchildren: Andre and Armon Burton, and
Arabus Cordona; Her great-granddaughter, Kaylee Marie Cordona, the
women she loved as her daughters: Yoko Burton, JoAnne Cordona, and Dee
Ferguson; and the many extended family members that she treated as sons
and daughters throughout the years.
Among her many awards and achievements was the 1st Army's Prestigious
Mrs. Lt. Award; The National Outstanding Young Women of America Award,
the Navy Relief 1000 Hr. Volunteer Pin and numerous other awards for
outstanding humanitarian and community service.
On June 1st, 2009 Dottie received recognition for her many years as a
Marine wife, loyal patriot and community service leader by James T.
Conway, General, U.S. Marine Corps, Commandant of the Marine Corps, on
behalf of the men and women of U.S. Marine Corps and a grateful nation.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Dottie's name to
Onslow Memorial Hospital in recognition of the outstanding care
provided to her by their staff and administration.

wake has been scheduled for Thursday, July, 2nd from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.
at the funeral home. The memorial service will be presided by Rev.
James Brown at 1st Missionary Baptist Church in Georgetown,
Jacksonville on Friday at 10:30am.
Dottie and her beloved son, Gary Wayne Capers, will be buried at the
Arlington National Cemetery at a date to be announced.

Doris Chaney Carscaden, 97, formerly of Cumberland, Maryland, died at
her place of residence in Wilmington, North Carolina, on May 20, 2009.
Mrs. Carscaden was born in Frostburg, Maryland, on March 6, 1912, the
daughter of Clarence Elmer Chaney and Ida Garlitz Chaney.
She was preceded in death by her husband, William Robert Carscaden, a
prominent Cumberland attorney and civic leader, in 1976, and by four
sisters and two brothers.
Surviving are her daughters, Mrs. Frederick S. Nicoll (JoAnn), Ocean
City, Maryland, and Mrs. William T. Kane, Sr. (Nancy), Wilmington,
North Carolina, and their husbands; two brothers, Oberlin T. Chaney,
Frostburg, and Daniel Chaney, Macomb, Michigan; four grandchildren,
Tracey Nicoll Pate and William James Nicoll, Baltimore, Maryland;
William T. Kane, Jr., Wilmington, North Carolina; Mary Kane Ziegler,
Raleigh, North Carolina; seven great grandchildren and numerous nieces
and nephews.
A Celebration of Life will be held at the Chaney family reunion at Deep
Creek Lake, Maryland, in October.
A graduate of Beall High School, Frostburg, Class of 1930, Mrs.
Carscaden was employed as an executive secretary by the Celanese
Corporation of America in Cumberland until her marriage in 1941.
She was a homemaker, an active member of Sts. Peter and Paul Roman
Catholic Church in Cumberland, a Brownie troop leader and a Red Cross
volunteer. She also held various offices in the Cumberland Women's
Civic Club and the Women's Golf Association of the Cumberland Country
Club.
The family suggests that memorials take the form of contributions to
the Lower Cape Fear Hospice and Life Center, 1414 Physicians Drive,
Wilmington, North Carolina, 28401.
Jimmie Lee Davis, born August 20, 1955, passed away at home on June 29,
2009.
He is predeceased by his father Edward T. Davis, Sr. Survivors include
his mother; Delarene "Jerry" Davis, 3 children, 1 granddaughter,
brothers and sisters, as well as his beloved Kim Woody.
A memorial service will be held 3:00 PM, Friday, July 3, 2009, at Coble
Ward-Smith, Oleander Chapel. A second informal memorial service will be
held July 5, 2009, at Leon's Ogden Restaurant from 5:00-6:00 PM.
Edward Henry Freeman 94, of Clinton, Md., formerly of Hallsboro, died
Friday, June 26, 2009, at Bradford Oaks, Clinton, Md. The funeral will
be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Mt. Hebron AME Zion Church, 570 Red Bug
Road, Hallsboro. Burial will be at Culter Cemetery, Lake Waccamaw.

died Monday, June 29, 2009, at Cypress Pointe Rehabilitation and Health

Linda Hawes 91, of Rose Hill, died Tuesday, June 30, 2009, at Day
Springs Assisted Living of Wallace. The funeral will be at 11 a.m.

Bessie Fay Hunt died Tuesday, June 30, at Lower Cape Fear Hospice &
LifeCareCenter. The daughter of the late George Franklin Hunt of Pender
County and Nerta Josephine Holt Hunt of Burlington, NC, she was born in
Wilmington, NC, on June 3, 1917. She was predeceased by her brother
George F. Hunt, Jr., her nephew George F. Hunt, III and her
sisters-in-law Elsie D. Hunt, Mary C. Hunt, and Louise B. Hunt. She is
survived by her sister, Aleen H. Baggett, Richmond, VA; nieces, Shirley
Baggett Shaw and husband, John, of Rochester, NY; Peggy Josephine
Baggett of Richmond, VA; and Marsha H. Drish of Wilmington; and great
nephews, John and Sel Drish of Wilmington, and great nieces Rebecca D.
Eaddy of Wilmington and Katharine (Katie) Shaw of Washington, DC.
Services will be Sunday, July 5 at 2:30 p.m. at St. Paul's Episcopal
Church with the Rev. Theodore McConnell officiating with burial
following at Oakdale Cemetery. The family will receive friends
beginning at 1:30 p.m. before the service in the church library and at
her home at other times. Pallbearers will be J. D. Causey, Joe Farr,
Dale Todd, Bill Wallace, Gerald Watkins, John Whitehead.
Bessie Fay graduated from East Carolina Teachers College (ECU) with
majors in Mathematics, Business Education and English. She worked in
the News Bureau of the college and was an active participant in the
Campus YWCA.
She was a partner in the family business, Pender Furniture Company, and
she taught briefly at New Hanover High School and Miller Motte Business
College. In 1963 she was hired as Executive Director of the YWCA of
Wilmington (YWCA Lower Cape Fear) where she served for more than 18
years. She was instrumental in the growth of its facilities and its
services for the communities of Southeastern North Carolina. When she
retired in 1981, the main building was named in her honor. At that time
Cape Fear United Way recognized her dedicated service. Later that year
the local NOW acknowledged her for "Outstanding Feminist Contributions
to New Hanover County."
Bessie Fay was a lifelong communicant of St. Paul's Episcopal Church
and in 1968 was the first woman elected to its vestry. While on the
vestry, she served as treasurer of the church and as chair of the
search committee for a new rector. She was active in the Altar Guild
and St. Agnes Chapter of the Episcopal Church Women. She edited "A
Brief History of the Episcopal Church Women of the Diocese of East
Carolina" written by Louise B. Hunt.
When the Episcopal churches of Wilmington coalesced to begin a soup
kitchen, she was one of the representatives from St. Paul's. The result
was the soup kitchen at Church of the Good Shepherd - now Good Shepherd
House. She and her sister, Aleen, volunteered at the soup kitchen every
fourth and fifth Tuesday of the month for more than a year at its
beginning.
Bessie Fay was an asset to her community, willingly volunteering her
time and talents. During World War II, she was a member of the Plane
Spotters, helping keep our shores safe from enemy invasion. She was a
member of the original board of the Services for the Aging and also
served on the Good Neighbor Council which preceded the Human Relations
Commission.
After her retirement she volunteered as the bookkeeper for Domestic
Violence Shelter and Services, leading to the computerizing of their
financial records. They recognized her for her "Dedicated and Generous
Volunteer Services" in 1987. She volunteered to keep the records and
send notices to donors for the Cape Fear Area United Way Combined
Capital Campaign. As a result of her diligence, the auditor was able to
reduce the amount set aside as uncollectible. They also gave her an
award in 1987.
Her services as a volunteer continued at the YWCA. She served as
volunteer coordinator of the YWCA's Capital Campaign in 1981 - 82. She
was honored as Volunteer of the Year in 1984. Then she began the
research needed to write a history of the YWCA. She studied the
microfilm of the local newspaper for the records between 1913 - 1935.
The balance of information came from the archives of the YWCA. The
book, "Inspired To Lead," can be found in the North Carolina section of
the New Hanover County Library. It covers 1913 - 1992. For all of her
contributions to her community she was awarded the YWCA Women of
Achievement Lifetime Achievement Award in 2002.
